Busy Weekend~

November 8th, 2010

Last Friday night was Bambu X DJ Muggs Live-In Store at Backside Records in Burbank.  The mixtape titled “The Los Angeles, Philippines Mixtape” was released that day.  Pnoy Apparel was also there for a special offering of the limited edition snapback, t-shirt, and sweatshirt for the mixtape.  Great show, crowd came through to see Bambu and DJ Muggs go off with the new material.  Cop the mixtape!  As always, Bambu is giving you something to think about with his lyrics and subject matter…this time laced with beats by DJ Muggs (of Soul Assassins/Cypress Hill fame).

This past Saturday marked the premiere of “Amigo”, by director John Sayles at the Mann’s Grauman Chinese Theatre in Hollywood.  John Sayles once again gives us a beautiful character-driven film, this time against the backdrop of the turn-of-the-century Philippine-American War. The able cast is led by Oscar winner Chris Cooper as the American colonel, Garret Dillahunt as the earnest lieutenant and Joel Torre as village leader Rafael. Imbued with the subtle dignity that makes Sayles’ films so engaging, Rafael is the moral compass around whom the film revolves. In a war that is in many ways similar to the one we are fighting now, Rafael faces the unwelcome challenge of how to keep his people together under occupation. Ultimately he decides that cooperation with the Americans is the best way to protect the village welfare, but his compliance is considered betrayal by his brother who is a leader of the rebel fighters. Refusing to judge any of its characters, the film explores how in war all sides make compromises and no one’s innocence remains intact.

Get ready for Manny Pacquiao vs. Antonio Margarito next week, November 13.  Another busy weekend!
